Imagine a future where you have unlimited access to clean electricity without relying on fossil fuels and other non-renewable energy sources. Better yet, you wouldn’t have to depend on commercial providers to supply you with this power, nor do you have to pay for it. That’s where Amptricity’s new home battery model comes in!

Amptricity’s solid-state battery unit is the latest in sustainable energy technology

Most recently, the US-based company launched its solid-state battery unit. By definition, it’s a 265-pound battery that uses solid electrolyte cells in lieu of lithium-ion batteries that contain liquid electrolytes.

There are different versions of this bunker-like battery unit available, ranging from 12 kWh to 48 kWh. They each come with an inverter and cater to various energy needs. The most basic of these is the 12 kWh model: as the name suggests, it delivers 12.07 kWh of usable energy, has a maximum continuous output of 3 kWh for charging and discharging, and features a peak power of 5 kWh for 10 seconds—in the latter’s case, this makes the unit ideal for backup and off-the-grid applications.

Because of its higher energy densities, the unit has garnered a round-trip efficiency of 95%, enabling it to handle up to 11,000 deep charge and discharge cycles. In terms of temperature range, it operates between -40°F and 131°F, allowing it to function quite well in both hot and cold conditions.

The battery unit sounds great, and the benefits are even greater

From an energy standpoint, this solid-state battery unit is certainly innovative. It also promises numerous other benefits, including:

  • Compact, lightweight design: Designed for space efficiency, this 32in x 19in x 21in unit can store lots of energy. It also makes it easier for owners to install in their homes, either indoors or outdoors.
  • Reduced fire risk: Because of the lack of liquid electrolytes, this reduces the chance of thermal runaway occurring. In turn, this decreases the risk of fire or explosions.
  • 100% recyclable: The unit is built from non-toxic and eco-friendly materials.
  • Quick-charging and extended lifespan: Unlike traditional batteries, they charge faster and offer a longer cycle life, allowing the unit to discharge over eight hours at rated power.

How much will it cost you to purchase this battery unit?

Efficiency and safety are the main selling points of this battery unit, which also boasts an impressive 25-year warranty for its battery core. Nevertheless, potential buyers may be deterred by the unit’s asking price.

Per their website, Amptricity is selling the 12 kWh model—the basic version—for $16,999, including taxes but not installation and shipping fees. For the 48 kWh model, it’s a whopping $67,999.00. Again, this does not include the aforementioned fees. Whatever model you buy, you will have to fork out a substantial amount of money for it, along with covering the costs of having it both shipped to your home and installed by a certified electrician to ensure compliance.

The waiting time is also 90 to 120 days after the full payment is received. While it represents Amptricity’s commitment to creating a high-quality, low-risk product, it is also an inconvenience for those who are eager to make the transition to renewable energy immediately or those who are loath to make the entire payment upfront.

Regardless, the pros of this solid-state battery unit certainty outweigh the cons. It gives individuals the means to sustainably generate clean energy from the comfort of their own homes. Furthermore, it allows them to significantly cut down on their carbon footprint by making a positive contribution to the environment. This makes the dream of a green future more real.
